– Leigh Hunt
With rising advancement in technology and automation and its heavy usage in life, people are slowly move away from living a healthy life. Irregular sleep cycles, unhealthy diet and no physical activity are some of the main constituents of this unhealthy lifestyle. It is high time now that we understand how important it is to keep ourselves physically and mentally fit.
Fitness in the present day has really widened its horizon. In the conventional sense, fitness is considered having a fit and lean body. But now fitness is not just related to physical well-being but also mental well-being. Both the aspects play a vital role in the overall fitness of a person.
I personally think that having a healthy mind and a healthy body are a must to work efficiently and increase productivity while doing any kind of activity. Physical fitness plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Physical fitness improves our overall health, by revitalizing our respiratory system and stimulating the lungs to work efficiently. Studies have shown a positive correlation between physical fitness and a healthy life. Regular physical activity prevents one from chronic diseases; different types of physical activities like aerobic exercises help in reducing risk of heart diseases, flexibility exercises help by keeping the body agile and reduces the risk of injury and keeps the skeletal structure strong and strength training helps in improving muscle strength. A good run or a workout session is something I really look forward to after a long day at work.
Mental fitness is as important as physical fitness, it keeps our emotional and brain health in a good shape. One’s mental health not only affects the individual but also people around that individual and any kind of mental health issues if they are not addressed at the correct time, they can tend to be dangerous as well. Depression, anxiety, panic attacks are the few terms which we now see in our day-to-day conversations, which means we should start addressing these issues publicly and follow such a lifestyle which tries to promote mental well-being as well.
The best way to keep the mind healthy is meditation, as it is an excellent stress relief technique. It helps in lowering the stress levels and regulates blood pressure. I believe that meditating is that one activity which helps me keep all the tension and stress away and by doing so there is an inner feeling of contentment, which cannot be really explained in words.
Our body is the most important asset we can ever own, thus taking care of it is our responsibility and it takes time to figure out, “Why?”. But once you have it set in your thought process that the best person to help you is you, there is no stop in living a happy and healthy life. I always make sure that, no matter how tiring the day at work was, I meditate for a few minutes or go for a run. Not only it keeps my body fit and healthy it also helps in keeping my mental health in good shape.
