Torres del Paine embodies a place of dreams with beautiful lakes, snow-capped mountains and is home to some of the best hiking trails in Patagonia. The W hike is named so for the zigzag paths through the mountains, and you’ll get sweeping views the whole way. Incidentally, it contains the best of Chilean hikes: crystal clear glacial lakes, jagged peaks, magical powdered snow, and glittering surreal glaciers giving you the full – ‘breath-taking’ experience.
As Torres del Paine is one of the most famous parks in Patagonia, it makes it a must-do hike in South America! The total distance of the hike is approximately 100 km. It can be covered over 4-5 days on average or 6-7 days if you want to spend more time enjoying the scenic views of the park and with shorter days walking and spending each night in shared dormitory/ campsite accommodations.
There is something special to visit every day of the hike and you will be wowed by the magnificence of the views. Over the journey you will get to witness the iconic locations of the Torres del Paine national park, some of which are:
- Cerro Paine Grande is the tallest peak of the Cordillera Paine mountain range in Torres del Paine National Park as you approach the French Valley. It has stunning summits which will surely take your breath away.
- The French Valley is a hidden cleft in the Andes that’s topped by a hanging glacier and spotted with lush beech forests.

- The Base of the Towers is where you will either start or end your hike. It is a spectacular spot with a gorgeous view of the lake just overlooking the popular Torres del Paine granite spires.

- Los Cuernos can easily be called the heart of Torres del Paine. The beautiful mountains give the picture-perfect northern view of the hike and the different summits can be seen from here.

- Grey Glacier is one of the largest glaciers in Torres del Paine and certainly the most magnificent and striking view with the colossal snow and icy sheets of water cascading over.

- The wildlife in the national park cannot be missed as you will encounter a range of the diverse fauna thriving there. Look out for guanacos (related to llamas), Magellanic woodpeckers, Patagonian gray foxes, Andean condors, or even the more elusive pumas and the rare Chilean Huemul, or South Andean deer.

Here are some points to keep in mind before planning your trek:
- Although the W Trek is not very difficult, some hiking experience is certainly recommended. There would be daily hikes of about 16 km per day so it is advised to work on one’s strength and stamina at least 3-4 months in advance to get used to lots of walking and build endurance. The trail is well-maintained for the majority of the route so there is no need for any sort of technical expertise in climbing.
- The primary challenges would be having to navigate over the wet rocks and bridges and the unpredictability of the weather which can change from blazing sunshine to heavy rain within a few hours. Generally, the summer season from November to March is recommended, however that also makes it very busy and crowded at the time with prices of accommodation rising as well.
- One great tip is to “pack for four seasons”, but don’t overpack! Wear layers of clothes so it is convenient to remove or add a layer as the weather changes, and don’t forget to carry SPF because the sun in the South can be very harsh, hiking poles to protect your knees and a waterproof backpack.
- There are mainly two options available for accommodation – camping tents and refugios (local name for a refuge or shelter). A refugio typically is a mountain hut or guesthouse that has a dormitory-type setting. It is a great choice if you would like to live in a rustic, comfortable space with shared dining areas where you can interact with other hikers as well.
The W Trek is absolutely one of the best options for a long-distance trek in Patagonia because it is the perfect combination of an enriching hiking experience, beautiful scenic views, good accommodation options to make the journey not very tedious, all with a moderate level of difficulty for the climb!
